Ten Tips for a Successful Home Move
10. Research Companies
One of the first things to do when planning a move is to find out information about the Florida Moving Companies that you may be interested in using. Ask friends and family for recommendations and check out sites like YELP! and Google Searches. It is important to work with a Florida Mover that is licensed and insured but also have been in business for plenty of years. A good source on Florida Moving Companies is the Better Business Bureau website. If the moving company has a lot of complaints filed against it, it might be better to continue your search.
9. Get Different Estimates to Get a Better Price
If you are moving to another state, charges are based on the total weights of the items being moved, the total distance to be moved, packing and other services. It is important to get anywhere from 3 to 6 moving quotes well in advance of your move. A lot of companies give quotes over the phone. Never accept an estimate over the phone. It is always better to have the a moving company official come to your home and throughly inspect the items for an accurate moving quote. This way the official can give you a solid quote on how much it will cost you to move your home. It is also important to ask if the moving estimates are binding or non-binding.
8. Make Sure the Mover is Aware of Everything that Must Be Moved
Make sure that the Moving Company you select is aware of all the items that has to be moved. If an item is missed or skipped this will add an extra cost to the move that was not included in the original estimate. The more detailed you are about the move and the location of your home will help the mover out a lot. How far is the door from the truck ? Do you have a 2 story home ? The more information you can provide the moving company, the easier it will be for them to perform the job at the quote that was given.
7. Get Insurance.... or don't be surprised if you find items broken
Having renters or homeowners insurance insures your belongings when they are at your home but not when they are on the move in between homes. If you are moving cross country, it may be very wise to consider moving or relocation insurance. If you pack your own belongings, the moving company will likely not insure for broken items. If you want coverage it is recommended that the moving company packs your belongings. On average the moving company is liable for certain dollar amounts pertaining to items based on the weight of the shipment, up to a certain amount.
6. Read the Contract..... and Read it again....Closely
Moving Companies will issue the mover a "bill of lading" also known as a legal contract between you the consumer and the moving company. IT IS IMPORTANT that you read the contract. MAKE SURE you understand the agreement before you sign it. ALSO KEEP YOUR COPY because if something goes wrong you will be able to make a case. Once you sign the bill of lading, you are required to pay whatever it says you are supposed to pay. The Bill of Lading should include the name and address of the mover company, the method of payments accepted, time of pickup, minimum + maximum amounts to pays as well as other details about your move.
5. Ask Questions
Before you sign your moving contract, make sure that is covers rates and charges, as well the mover's liability for your possessions, dates for pickup and delivery and claims protection. It is important to read the document carefully. ASK QUESTIONS if you do not know what a term means or if you just don't understand. Moving Company scams are not uncommon, so you definitely want to make sure who you do business with is a reputable company. If the company seems fishy and the contract doesn't feel right trust your instincts and ask questions ! The last thing you want to do is have the moving company to hold our possessions hostage and force you to pay more costs.
4. Move During the Winter
The best months to move is between October and April. The rates will be lower because it is not a busy time for movers. Families with children tend to move during the Summer due to the kids being on vacation. A good way to get a better price is to leave your moving company quotes on the table so that when the next company comes by for an estimate they will know they have competition. More than likely they will negotiate a better deal with you.
3. Don't Change your Moving Date
If you change your pickup / delivery date, expect to incur a storage cost due to the change. Make sure that you are able to move into your new residence on the scheduled date. If you have to place items in storage for a night or week or a month, expect to pay a premium on this. Also remember about the small hidden costs that you may have not expected. Moving a difficult item like an armoire or a heavy piano down a flight of stairs will cost extra. Make sure to read your contract diligently and if you have any questions make sure to ask your moving company. If you have luxury items make sure to purchase extra insurance or hire special movers for these expensive items.
2. Make an Itemized List and Make Sure Nothing Was Lost or Damaged
Moving Companies are responsible for the loss or damage your belongings caused by the carrier. If your possessions are missing or if cartons are damaged, you should note this on your inventory sheet at delivery. It is very very important to take detailed notes and pictures of your belongings before with a timestamp for proof. You should verify with your inventory sheet to make sure your belongings are in good condition and has been delivered.
1. Make Sure the Company is Legit
Because moving companies have been given a bad name due to over charging and not taking responsibility for broken items or holding belongings hostage - it is very important to work with a reputable Florida Moving Company. Do your due diligence by visiting the company to see whether it seems legit or not. Are the trucks big enough - Are they insured - Do they have a Moving License. If you are moving interstate, make sure that the moving company is authorized in that state.
Compass Moving and Storage has been a South Florida Moving Company since 1962.
